Onions
We started this month sowing onion seeds in clay pots in the greenhouse.
The varieties sown were:
- Alisa Craig
- Giant Zittau
- Giant Red Brunswick
As of the end of January the seeds had not yet germinated.
Strawberries
We have made a new strawberry bed close to the First World War allotment plot to create more space to grow vegetables.
Display at Bromley Civic Centre
Visit the London Borough of Bromley Civic Centre reception to see a display on the ‘Caring for the Casualties of the First World War in Bromley’ allotment. The display includes information on the progress made since the start of the project and extracts from a Sutton Seed catalogue from 1916.
Did you know?
Due to food shortages people were banned from throwing rice at weddings. You were also not allowed to feed pigeons.
New foods such as egg substitute, dried soup powder and custard that just needed water added were created to try and overcome the shortages.
