Ellen Mason lived with her husband Stanley at ‘Homecroft’ on Crofton Road, Orpington.
At the outbreak of the First World War Ellen was aged 55. She became a member and Honourable Secretary of the Orpington refugee committee.
One of Ellen’s sons, Kenneth, served in the First World War as an Officer in the Royal Engineers. Kenneth was mentioned in dispatches three times, was awarded the Military Cross having served in France and Iraq.
