Commandant Isabella Lewin

Isabella was born in 1869 in Bickley. In 1891 she married Wilfred Hale Lewin a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army.

Before the War

The 1911 census recorded Isabella as living at 51 London Road, Bromley with her husband.

During the War

Isabella was a member of Kent 54 VAD and acted as the Commandant of St Mary’s VAD, Bromley from its opening in October 1914. Her VAD service came to an end at the end of 1918.

After the War

Isabella was awarded an MBE in January 1919.
